Yesterday I had a phone conversation with one of my platinum coaching students. She’s been trying to get her show launched, but every time she’d think about creating episodes she’s hit a mental block.

The answer finally came in this statement, “I’m just not sure which direction to take it. There are so many ways I can go, so many things I could talk about. Who exactly am I trying to reach with my show?”

Bingo! That’s a question that every should ask when starting a new show or business — and then revisit regularly.

So I walked her through a few questions and helped her define the target audience for her show.

By the end of the call, she was thrilled and couldn’t wait to outline her first episodes.

In this episode we discuss how you can carefully define your target market in order to more effectively get their attention and create content that will keep them coming back again and again.

The launch of this new show, along with the new branding and content on this blog, represent an important shift in the content and tips that I plan to deliver to small business owners and entrepreneurs like you.

Over the last couple years I have seen amazing transformations take place in my life and business as well as those of numerous colleagues. I’ve seen their incomes rocket despite the fact that many of them have reduced their workload. I’ve seen them become authors, speakers and even celebrities. I’ve seen them quit jobs they no longer enjoyed so they could pursue their true passion.

In each of these cases there are consistent principles that have brought them unprecedented success and fulfillment. In this episode I trace the source of this success back to the a common asset that each of them has built for their business.

Then I present the most effective and powerful tool set that you can use for putting this into action in your own life and business.

I worked on the most important content I’ve created to date. I promised it would be out on Tuesday. If you are on my email newsletter list, you got it last night.

If there’s one message I want to communicate to business owners and podcast producers, this is it. You can access the first video in the series here.

I’ll release the other episodes over the next couple weeks. To get access to the remaining videos, you’ll need to sign up at the bottom of the page under the video player.

Please feel free to let me know what you think and what else you would like to know about the topic in the comments below.

I poured a lot of time and energy into this content because I feel very strongly about the message that it communicates. I think you’ll really enjoy it.

Do you know what the ultimate asset is that you can create for your business? I’m currently working on a new e-book and series of videos that talks about what the ultimate asset is and how you can create it. This asset is not something you just buy with money, although it will bring you a significant increase in income if you have it.

I’m not going to reveal what the ultimate asset is in this post, but I do want to give you a few hints and things to think about that are related before I start releasing the content on Tuesday.

Across consumer markets, attention is becoming the scarcest – and so most strategically vital – resource in the value chain. Attention scarcity is fundamentally reshaping the economics of most industries it touches. (Hague 2005)

Attention deficiency will kill your business. If you can’t get the attention of your market, you can’t make your offer. If you can’t make your offer you don’t make money. It’s that simple. Unfortunately, in the information age, attention is getting increasingly scarce.

In my upcoming e-book I discuss the source of this scarcity and how you can overcome it. The ultimate asset I referred to above also happens to be the ultimate cure for attention scarcity.

Here’s one more hint about the ultimate asset and a preview from the e-book.

Stay tuned for the first video on Tuesday. This is THE most important content that I have made as a podcasting and marketing consultant. You don’t want to miss it.

I just read a post on the Creating Passionate Users blog that talks about creating a better beginning for a presentation or story. It can easily be applied to podcasting, too.

I found the post while reading this entry in Tim Bourquin’s Trade Show Startup blog. He applies the principles to creating passionate show attendees. I certainly learned a couple things to apply when I present as well as when I podcast.

Give it a read to find out why maybe you need to get rid the first 2-3 minutes of your podcast episodes.

In the same post, Tim mentions the importance of not falling in the middle.

It’s better to be hated or loved than be somewhere in between.

Words of wisdom for someone like me that can fall into a people-pleaser trap. To quote one of my marketing mentors, Dan Kennedy, “You know you’re doing something right when you piss some people off.”
