Effective marketing is about getting the right message to the right market (potential listeners). When identifying your market, it’s important to remember that often less is more. Narrowing your target market to smaller, more carefully selected niche usually produces better results.

You will have the best success in marketing your podcast if you carefully choose your target listeners. The more you know about your niche, the better you will be at creating the right message and knowing how to get that message to them.

If you still don’t have a carefully defined subject matter, format and target audience then you need to take time to think about that now or your marketing will be a waste of time. Zero in on a niche and you will see much better returns on your promotional efforts.

————-

We’ve discussed how it is just as important to keep your current listeners as it is to find news ones. One thing that will keep your audience listening is their attachment to you as a person. Don’t be afraid to infuse your own personality into your podcast. Make yourself a trusted source of entertainment/information that your listeners want to come back to again and again. Use your personality to bring people back.

NOTE: Decide in advance how much personal info you want to share and be careful about giving out things like your address, your phone number, etc.

In chapter 8 of Promoting Your Podcast I talk about more strategies for developing a relationship with your listeners.

OK. I admit. I’m stretching for an entry for the letter X. Have you seen how few ‘X’ words there are in the dictionary? Despite my weak attempt to be clever, this tip is valuable all the same.

Let’s say you have a podcast on knitting. You could make up some flyers about your podcast and visit yarn stores. Ask if they would let you place some flyers by the cash register. If you need, you can offer to mention the store in your podcast in exchange for leaving flyers. Hang a flyer in the window as well. You could even arrange for them to place your flyer in their shopping bags.

Think about what kinds of places your target demographic frequents often and find ways to place your flyers there. Your flyer should include:

An enticing headline

A description of your podcast

Your web address

A call to action (tell them how to listen or subscribe)

There are a number of ways to attract new listeners by writing short articles that relate to the topic of your podcast. These articles should deliver valuable information, but they only need to be 500-1000 words long. Here are two ways to use this kind of supplementary text content to attract new listeners:

1. Post it on your own site to attract search engine traffic

I’ve already talked about how you need quality text content on your site that will get indexed and ranked in the search engines. Your show notes provide good text content, but adding articles to your site will boost your search engine marketing even more.

2. Post it to article directories

There are lots of web sites and email newsletters that are constantly in need of fresh content. There are directories where you can post an article with permission to use it. Anyone who publishes the article is required to include your byline (a short bio and link back to your site). This is a great way to get your name and link in several places around the internet as the article gets picked up and published. Here are a three article directories that you can post to:

BPubs

Ezine Articles

Article City

To get the most out of this strategy, you need to use the right search
keywords in your articles so they will be ranked higher in the search engines. I talk about how to do this in Chapter 4 of Promoting Your Podcast.

Social media, such as podcasting, result in constant waves of new content hitting the Internet. The amount of information is staggering. How can an individual find something of interest, let alone get his own content noticed by others? Many web users have adopted a method of categorization called tagging, an informal and collaborative way for web users to categorize information on the Internet.

Millions of content creators and consumers freely choose words to describe photos, web sites, blog posts, podcasts and more. The idea is to allow the people who create and use the content to label it anyway they want. Many social networking sites use tagging for sharing and indexing web content.

Tagging makes it easier to find and share content on the Internet. What does tagging mean to you as a podcaster? To fully plug into the social media revolution, you need to take advantage of tagging. There are a number of social networks that you can use to attract listeners. Tag your content and submit it to sites such as Technorati.

In Promoting Your Podcast chapter 5, you’ll discover how to:

Tag your media for inclusion in social networks

Automatically submit new posts to Technorati

Choose high traffic tags

Attract listeners from social media web sites

Generate buzz in the blogosphere

Use social media web sites to conduct marketing espionage

Clicks from search engine results pages are one of the most sought after sources of traffic on the Internet. This traffic is free and tends to produce well-targeted visitors. There’s a good chance that someone who clicks to your site from Google wants something that you have. This is called organic search traffic to distinguish it from paid search listings, such as the ones that appear on the right side of Google’s search results.

The goal of search engines is to serve up the most relevant information when someone searches for a given phrase. The engines give top search placement to web pages that they think offer the searcher what she’s looking for. Your goal is to get ranked as high as possible in search results for phrases that are relevant to your podcast’s topic. To get one of the top positions you need to provide content that the search engines see as on topic and good in quality.

It’s important to note that the major search engines, such as Google, only index text content. Even though you’re a podcaster and produce audio/video content, it’s text content that will determine your rankings. To get a higher ranking you need to optimize your site content to be as relevant as possible for the search engines.

Search engine optimization is based on keywords. These are the phrases that people who are interested in content such as yours are likely to search for. To get more search engine traffic, choose keywords that your prospective listeners are likely to search for and use them in your show notes and other quality text content on your site. For the best results, you must use keywords that are searched for often, but don’t have too much competition.

Take a look at your show notes and see if you could do more to use keywords. Consider adding supplementary content to your site to get indexed and ranked higher for your keyword phrases.

In chapter 4 of Promoting Your Podcast you’ll learn how to:

Plan your search engine marketing campaign

Find which phrases get searched for the most

Find the keywords with the best supply/demand ratio

Use your keywords on the page to increase your search engine rankings
