Citizen’s Concert | What do Handel’s Messiah and social media have in common?

HandelLast night I attended a sing-a-long performance of Handel’s Messiah. However, this was no ordinary concert.

For those who are not familiar with this musical piece, it consists of several movements performed by an orchestra, four soloists and a chorus. My wife sang the alto soloist part.

Here’s what impressed me about the event:

  • The chorus parts were sung by the audience.
  • It was just as much about participation as it was about entertainment.
  • No one was paid to participate.
  • The musicianship was impressive.
  • For little to no practice, things sounded pretty good.
  • Everyone had a great time.
  • It was free to attend.

I guess you could call it a "citizen’s concert".
