Dinner with Podango

Podango LogoThis past week I had the pleasure of dining with Lee Gibbons and Doug Smith, who head up Podango, at the world famous Carmines next to Times Square. We batted around some ideas and I got a chance to pick their brains about their new company.

In brief, Podango is creating numerous podcast stations. Each station is focused on an area of interest, produced by a station director and aggregated from a variety of quality podcasts (with permission of the content creators). The goal is to make things easier for the audience to find content that interests them, for the advertiser to find quality content to sponsor and for the podcasters to make money.

This brings Podango into the ranks of companies creating "networks" of sorts to bring ad money to podcasts. I like their model best. Here are a few of the things I like about Podango:

  • They leave a generous amount of money on the table (70%) for the station director to split with those who contribute content.
  • They give podcasters the business administration and support they need, allowing the them to do what they want to do most and do best…creat content.
  • They don’t want to control anyone’s content.
  • They want to make the process easier for the audience (something we should all be working towards).
  • They understand the importance of community, communication and interaction in this medium.
  • They had by far the best, most effective and most interesting booth at the Podcast Expo. Check out the very interesting and very valuable content their Unconference provided.
  • Lee and Doug are a pleasure to associate with. They truly want to help podcasters succeed.

If you’re looking to make money with ads/sponsorships, then you might want to get involved with Podango, either as a station director or syndicated participant.

You can get a nice overview of how Podango works by listening to Scott Bourne’s recent interview with Lee Gibbons.
