The name of your podcast is likely the first exposure most listeners will have to your show. Your title usually only has a few seconds to do two things:

  1. Give the potential listener an idea of what your show is about
  2. Entice them to click to give it a try

You need a title that is meaningful, but that is still creative and alluring. The right mixture of these two elements will depend on your genre and target audience.

Here are a couple tips for brainstorming a name for your podcast:

  1. Browse your genre in the podcast directories and take note of the names that jump out at you
  2. Search online for books on your topic and notice what titles and phrases grab your attention
  3. Don’t be too creative or “cute.”

A great way to find listeners is to go where people who are interested in your topic are hanging out online. Give them a taste of what you’ve got. Command some attention and turn them into loyal listeners.

Whatever your podcast’s topic, chances are there are message boards dedicated to it. Get involved in these communities. Forums are great places for you to find loyal listeners. People who participate in them are often rabid about the topic being discussed.

By commenting in forums, you get your web address in front of a group of targeted prospects. Most forums let you include a link when you comment. This is usually done in the signature. Always include a link to your podcast in the signature.

In Chapter 3 of Promoting Your Podcast, you’ll learn:

  • The right and wrong way to participate in message boards (one will bring you listeners, the other will get you a bad reputation)
  • How to write an effective forum signature that will compel people to click through to your site
  • How to include a live link in your signature
  • Additional creative ideas for promoting your podcast on message boards

Internet Business MasteryYour podcast should have a logo. When I say logo, I’m referring to the square image that appears in your listing in iTunes and other directories.

iTunes has stated that your podcast must have a logo in order to be considered for their featured listings. A logo will also make your podcast look more professional and catch more attention in the directories.

You podcast logo needs to:

  • Be a JPG file
  • Be 300×300 pixels in size
  • Be professional and clean
  • Not infringe on the copyright or trademark of others
  • Be included in the iTunes tags in your feed

In Chapter One of Promoting Your Podcast, I talk more about iTunes tags and how to use them to include your logo in your feed so that it will appear in the directories.

Keywords are words and phrases that potential listeners and site visitors might search for to find content such as yours. Targeting the right keywords is extremely important to the success of your marketing campaign.

Using the right keywords in your podcast title, feed, description, episode titles, and show notes will greatly increase the amount of free, targeted traffic you get from the search engines.

Spend some time brainstorming which keywords a potential listener might search for in iTunes or Google to find content such as yours. Target keywords that people search for often but that don’t have too much competition in the search rankings. Check your podcast description. Make sure that you are using at least a couple good search phrase keywords.

In chapter 4 of Promoting Your Podcast, I walk you through the exact process that I use to research and choose my keywords. I also show you how I use my keywords to achieve #1 spots in Google and iTunes searches. You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify which keywords get the most searches
  • Find the keywords that have the least amount of competition
  • Use keywords to get higher rankings in Google bringing you free, targeted traffic
  • Use keywords to get top search spots in iTunes
