Some podcasting colleagues and I have put together a collection of the best “how to” content for podcasters to be syndicated as an ongoing podcast station on Podango called the Podcast Mastery Network (this link won’t be active until Mar 5th). I’ve asked some of my favorite podcasters to participate in the station and share their best podcasting tips and tricks.
The station will include content from Paul Colligan (Podcast Tools & Profitable Podcasting), John Havens (About.com Guide to Podcasting), Charles Stricklin (Podcast Planning), Leesa Barnes (Podonomics) and myself. The station launches on March 5th.
You can listen to a preview clip/promo for the station here.
A Podango station takes niche content chosen by a station director and aggregates it into one convenient place and feed. In this case I’m the station director. Collecting content into stations curated by directors makes it easier for listeners to find content that interests them. For podcasters it makes it easier to procure advertising dollars.
It will be interesting to try the network/station model. Until now my podcasts have made money as a result of personal branding, promoting my services as a consultant and affiliate sales. These are still my favorite ways to profit from podcasting, but I recognize that the ad/sponsorship model will be best for many podcasters. Not everyone has their own brand, product or service to promote.
It’s not easy to find sponsorships for your podcast. Many podcasters don’t like attending to the sales and business side of making money from podcasting. That’s where a service such as Podango can help. They offer logistical support in running your podcast like a business and resources for making revenue from podcasting.
Their station model also offers the “strength in numbers” benefit of a podcast network. One show by itself might not be enough to entice advertisers, but the total audience of several shows in a focused niche can command more attention.
Now here comes the full disclosure. I’m currently being paid by Podango to advise them on the development of their podcasting and station platforms. Regardless of the checks they write me, I believe they have the right ideas and intentions. In addition, they are some of the most pleasant guys to work with in the industry.
I’m excited to see how things work out with the Podcast Mastery station as well as the Podango platform. If you’re interested in being a station director, contact me and we can see if it seems like a good fit for you.
