A business card is a simple and powerful networking tool. Print business cards and hand them out everywhere you go. Whenever you talk to someone about your show, hand them a card.

A business card should do more then just give your name and contact info. Your card should include the following:

  • The title of your podcast
  • A brief statement that describes your podcast and gives the reader a compelling reason to listen to your show
  • A web address where they can listen to more
  • Your contact info
  • Your logo (optional)
  • Instructions on how to listen/subscribe in iTunes (optional)

Here are three more tips for designing an effective business card:

  1. Consider using a bi-fold card if your budget allows. This offers more space for you to include some brief info about podcasting and how to subscribe.
  2. Include a quote or two from a prominent person or raving fan
  3. Try Overnight Prints for ordering business cards. The prices and quality are great.

In chapter 1 of Promoting Your Podcast, you’l learn how to choose a gripping title for your podcast and write a description that will compel people to listen.

Great ideas to enhance what I already do! Now it’s back to the drawing board.

Hrm. Mind if I chime in with a voice of dissent?

A business card, in my opinion, serves a single purpose when it comes to promotion: it gets someone to visit your website.

Want to talk about podcasting on your card? Fine. But cramming it full (which likely would happen) of complicated explanations of how to subscribe in iTunes is tantamount to giving people instructions on how to search for your website on Google.

Get ‘em to your site, and make sure your site makes it easy for them to sample what you have to offer and then subscribe if they think it’s for them.

    Evo,

Thanks for your input. You’ll notice I put that item as optional. I don’t think it’s too complicated to include a statement such as:

Search in iTunes for GothamCast to subscribe

I agree that a business card should have a single, clear call to action. Whether it’s to visit your site or to subscribe to your podcast is up to you and depends on your audience.

Also, you can explain what a podcast is with a simple phrase such as, "It’s like radio for your MP3 player."

The copy doesn’t need to be complicated.
